Perhaps the most distinctive feature of Caswell Beach is the Oak Island Lighthouse. Activated in 1958, it is one of the last lighthouses built in the United States. Four thousand watts of light have warned mariners of the treacherous Frying Pan shoals, and guided them to the safety of the Cape Fear River entrance since then. It can be seen for over 24 miles, making it the brightest beacon of safety in the United States. The structure is now the possession of the Town of Caswell Beach, but will be maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard as an active lighthouse.
