Bald Head Island might be small, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t played an important role in the development of the United States. Long before Europeans learned of the island’s existence, local Native Americans often went to the island were they fished and gathered shellfish. During the American Revolution the British used the island as a fort because it provided them easy sea access. During the U.S Civil War, Confederate troops discovered that its location made it the perfect hub for both smuggling and shipping. While you’re on Bald Head Island, you can learn more about its history by touring Old Baldy Lighthouse and Smith Island Museum of History and Civil War Sites of Significance.
Bald Head Island is one of the few places left in the world where you won’t find any cars. While you’re there, you’ll need to walk or bike which not only helps ensure you stay physically fit, but also allows you to really take in and enjoy the beauty of your surroundings. If you’re worried about whether or not your body can handle that much physical activity, you can relax, while you can’t use a car, you are welcome to drive a golf cart around the island. The only way to access the island is via personal boat or the island’s ferry.
